How are you paid?
Paid leave is paid from the State Disability Insurance taken out of your pay, so how you’re paid decides whether you’ve paid in.
Did you buy the state’s Elective Coverage before your leave?
Self-employed people pay into State Disability Insurance only through Elective Coverage from the EDD.
Without Elective Coverage, self-employed pay doesn’t count toward leave pay.
Have you worked at this job for at least 6 months?
The state counts your pay from 5 to 18 months before your leave starts, so a newer job may not be all of it.
Will a partner or second parent also take bonding leave? Will the birth parent also take leave?
California pays each parent up to 8 weeks to bond with a new baby. The birth parent can get disability pay around the birth, and their own 8 weeks to bond.
